sponser a child

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

sorry, not sure what that last blog had to do with ’sharing food’. . . but. . .

have you ever considered sponsoring a child?

if you are consistently helping us share food, then you’re spending some of your hard-earned cash to share food.  i’d like to recommend that you consider a little different distribution.

here’s the way i see it; we’re doing some great things with ‘dude share the food’.  it’s a great opportunity to, as matthew 25 mentions, “share food with the hungry and water with the thirsty”.

however, there is another type of hunger.  overseas.  other continents.  you’ve seen the pictures.

if you’re spending xxx dollars for ‘dude share the food’, consider spending less for our sharing, so you can spend more to fight a true hunger.  the hunger over there is a deadly hunger.

a couple of great organizations to look at are World Vision, and Compassion International.  i’ve added their links to the fave’s on the right.

think about it.

buying lumber with cinderella

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

i don’t know if you heard about the tragedy that struck the Chapman family. . . if not, here’s the short version.

Steven Curtis Chapman is a singer/songwriter, who sings the message of God through his songs.  he’s struck a chord in many hearts, as witnessed by the 10 million albums sold, and 5 grammy awards.

he’s been blessed with 3 children, then blessed with 3 adopted children.

a recent song of his speaks of  ‘dancing with cinderella’, and talks about how soon the day will come when his daughter will be married off, and the clock will strike midnight, and she’ll be gone.

however, last week, his five-year-old daughter was killed by a car accident in his own driveway.  as i drove last friday morning, i heard the news.  my wife had just called to tell me.  then the song came on, and i wept.

today, my little cinderella helped me work on my deck most of the day.  then we went to get some lumber.  she was talking to my mother on the cell phone, and as we walked through the aisle, ‘dance with cinderella’ came on the store speakers.  i had to just stop, watch her, listen to her giggling with her oma, and enjoy.

later, back home, she danced a little outside as we listened to harry connick jr.

she’s so beautiful

love hurts

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

A little humor I hope everyone can appreciate:

Most of us have heard the expression, “love hurts”.  Usually, it’s used in reference to a relationship between the opposite sexes.  Last Saturday, while Rusty and I were sharing food with the homeless around Little Five Points, I came face to face (pardon my pun, you’ll soon see why), with a totally different meaning for the phrase.  One of the men, a VERY large person who had the size of an NFL lineman, wanted to show me his appreciation with a big hug.  Considering the fact that I’m approximately 5’ 8’ and 160 pounds, this was similar to a bear deciding to hug a jockey.  There was no way this gentleman was going to be denied his show of gratitude and affection.  Now all of this would have been fine except for one small factor…his face was smashed against mine, and his beard was tougher than any steel wool I’ve ever used.  To make matters worse, he kept moving his head, and the hug lasted for what seemed like the last 60 seconds of an NBA game.  It’s great to be appreciated, but from now on I’ll be wearing a “Rusty loves hugs” shirt when I help. (Actually, it’s a pretty small price to pay for doing the Lord’s will!)

Sandwiches, sandwiches, sandwiches

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Can you believe that we are making approximately 550 sandwiches a week?  Along with everyone of those sandwiches we try to send out a piece of fruit, something sweet, and some chips.  And believe it or not, we have alot of fun making those sandwiches, packing those lunches, and going to share.  We appreciate all donations that help accomplish this whether it is food, time, or money.   See you Saturday.

Needed supplies

Monday, May 12th, 2008

It is wonderful how many lunches we have been able to share.  However we are getting low on supplies and could use your help.  For Tuesday, we need lunch meat, cheese, fruit, and chips.  We are also running low on our plastic sandwich bags and we have no snack bags left.  If you are going to be able to help with any of the supplies needed for Tuesday, please respond to this post or email me directly (southernga@yahoo.com).  Thanks.

peace on my deck

Friday, May 9th, 2008

after working on my deck the other night, i showered, then sat on the new deck, to enjoy the peace and quiet.

the braves game was on the radio.

the frogs were croaking all around the pool.

the air conditioner was purring.  or rattling.

then, a flying machine roared over head!  i just had to laugh.  the “peace and quiet” of sitting on a deck near atlanta is not so “peaceful”!!  (then, in the trees, i saw the face of george washington.  or abe lincoln.  or one of those mt. rushmore heads.  had to laugh a little more).

i guess laughing brings a type of peace, too.  one great thing about our group of “sharers” is that we laugh a lot together. . . . . right, jackie??

food prep; tomorrow-6pm.   sunday-11:45am.

delivery; saturday-11am.  sunday-12:30pm-ish.

tuesday; like a well-oiled machine.

the kingdom is a fun place, isn’t it?

lorraine

Monday, May 5th, 2008

what a great weekend!!  on saturday, we shared nearly 300 meals, then, on our first sunday ever, we shared nearly 200 meals!!  YAY, we’re finally branching out again!

wow, it’s so amazing how God supplies us with food to share, and generous hands to prepare and deliver it!

two of those hands belong to lorraine, a very kind young lady who loves to go downtown.  we’re saddened by the fact that she will be moving far, far north, and we’ll surely miss her!  but, she’ll be near her mother, so, that’s a good thing.

i’d like to brag on her for one thing; she’s learned the most important thing, which is, showing love. . . i’ve seen her show love directly in the face of pain. . . to the very person causing her pain.  that kind of love can only come from God.  great job, lorraine, keep it up!!

tuesdays are rolling onward like a well oiled machine; great job, y’all!

this friday, at 6pm, we’ll be prepping the lunches for saturday.  some of the ladies want to attend a mother/daughter lunch, so, if you want to help prep, come friday eve.

if you’d like to be on the delivery team saturday, please let me know.  we’ll pack ‘em up at 11am (meet in the back of the church)

y’all are great!!  show love!!
