the sweeper

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

downtown last saturday, under a bridge, one man was bragging about another man who had swept a large area where they stay with a tiny whisk-broom.

the area was looking great. his back was very sore.

we gave him some aspirin and naproxyn.

on sunday, we went to the same area. we had a couple of gifts for him; a broom and a small rake he was wanting.

we sat under that bridge, giving away the lunches, and waiting for him. someone said that he had gone to church.

just as we were getting ready to leave, there he was, at the other end of the bridge, getting out of a van. so, we exchanged some hugs, gave him the tools, and prayed together. such a happy moment.

as we were leaving, i saw him in the mirror, sweeping like a maniac.

so cool.

aluminum

Friday, August 8th, 2008

while under a bridge with robert sunday, we were sharing meals and canned sodas.  one of the sodas had lost its’ pressure, so, i dumped it out by the curb.

we had been talking to a pleasant 67 yr old man named Floyd.  he had been a chef at a fancy hotel for years, but, now was staying under the bridge.  super nice, super pleasant guy.

he said i could throw the can in a box, as they would occasionally take cans and sell them to the recycler.  out of curiosity, i asked how much they get for aluminum now.  i couldn’t believe what he told me…..

“well, we don’t get the going rate”.  i asked why.  “well, they know we’re homeless, so they just give us less”.

i couldn’t believe it.  sure, we all know there are crooks, but, i just couldn’t believe it.  maybe we should go undercover with a camera… anyone?

fat cats, lazy dogs

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

a couple days ago, i saw dan, who was having a rough morning.  so many things to do, and, to top it all off, his cat was sick.  turns out, the cat is so fat that it couldn’t pee…. i hate when that happens….

then, at home later, i looked at my dog, duke.  he was just laying around, as usual, being lazy.  i told him, ‘you’ve got it made’

then, i wondered if we’re like these two varmints; fat and lazy.  i know sometimes we are, us american christians, don’tcha think?

do you know what the sin of sodom was??  i know what you’re thinking; homosexuality.  but, ezekial 16:49 says differently.  it says that they were “arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned, and they did not help the poor and needy”

“god, help us not to be like dan’s cat and my dog.  help us to be humble and concerned.  help us to help the poor and needy.  and let any good that we do make others glorify you.”  amen.
