wil and i were sharing meals on sunday, and we received a lesson in “meal logistics”.
a man was telling us about how he finds aluminum cans, then cashes them in on a certain day, in order to buy the special two-piece dinner the next day for $1.99. he said he’d get just about enough from the cans for that meal.
he also mentioned another way (i forgot how) that he was able to get about $7, and then he went to the dollar store, and bought 2 generic cans of ’spam’ for a dollar each, then some saltines, and then a couple dollars worth of bananas from the grocery store.
he took a couple of our lunches, and a couple more for his buddies, and thanked us, and said that they really did help him through the week.
(in the middle of the conversation, i was again maddened by the fact that he suspected that he was ripped off at the recycling place) (see previous blog “aluminum” from 8-8-08)
the conversation just made me realize how much i take for granted. i ate at mickeyD’s TWICE yesterday!
also, i never thought about someone in the U.S. living on $2 a day! i know people in the poor countries do, but, sunday, there i was, face to face, with someone who had to plan out how to get a small meal here and there….. wow….
“what would you do for a klondike bar?” probably just shell out a couple dollars without even thinking…
we’re so blessed.
