why we give

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

the other night, at passion city church, i was able to join a few thousand people singing to the King of the universe.  for a while, i just looked around, taking in the beauty of the singing-people… then i started to sing to the King, also.

later, we were reminded by the speaker (louie giglio) that we sometimes gather in to our churches without the awe that a powerful God deserves.  he said that if tiger woods were there, giving the prayer, we’d be twittering our friends like crazy.  or if the beatles reunited to lead the worship, we’d be updating our facebook- pronto.  he was right.

later still, we stood silently, trying to approach God in awe.  then we sang again.  “and i’ll stand in awe of you”  “you are God in heaven, here am i on earth, so i’ll let my words be few” (eccl. 5)

i found myself praying “God, please don’t kill me.  you’re so far above me, please don’t kill me”.  never really prayed like that before…

a few minutes ago, i read from luke 19, the zaccheus story.  Jesus went to his house to eat, and the others grumbled and said “he has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner”… … … i thought “wow, i’m so glad He does that!  me, the sinner; He’s come into my house, my life!”  AND He hasn’t killed me!!

what, you say, does this have to do with sharing food with the homeless? thank you for asking!

when someone thanks us for a meal, we’ve started responding “don’t thank me, thank God… He’s the giver!”

He’s given us so much life, so much grace, so much abundance, that we just have to give! it’s no chore, is it?  it’s just an overflow….

ps. check out what zaccheus did….

Last Tuesday I realized that the Lord can use even the littlest to serve others. Several times Moms have brought their school aged kids to help when schools were not in session. They have all helped. They wrapped sweets, separated bananas and helped fill the lunch bags. The youngest had been K4. He was our bag opener.

This last week we had a 19 month old helping us. He would take the sweets out of the box and put them up on the table for us.

Gives a whole new meaning to the verse “a little child will lead them.”

wil and i took lunches downtown today.  we had a nice visit with the guys in “bankhead village”, and it’s an absolutely gorgeous day.  70ish and a nice breeze…

later, while driving away from our last stop, i thought “man, it just doesn’t get any easier to drive away from the situations that we see, does it?”

then, later still, i was able to make a young lady’s day.  i wasn’t really trying to, and it was quite easy.

i was checking out of the grocery store (where i had gone for just a newspaper, but ended up with grape juice, salsa and pickles.  two of these items i like to never run out of.  yep, i’m spoiled.)  (i don’t think this paragraph will be proper, but..) okay, so i’m checking out, and she asked me if i’d like to donate a dollar for Jerry’s Kids.  i said sure, and she gave me the clover to put my name on.  i said ‘i don’t need to put my name on that, thanks’ and proceeded to swipe my payment. then i decided to put her name on it, and she says “oh, you just made my day. that’s so nice!”

man, that was easy.

try it sometime.

FUN! but COLD!

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

sunday, we were prepared to take out 100+ lunches, and it started snowing all morning!  in atlanta!  crazy!

robert and wil were getting ready to go, and my schedule changed, so i was able to join ‘em.

here’s wil’s car/truck, all ready to go.

cool, eh?

our first stop, which we call “bankhead village”, is a group of ramshackle-huts, in the woods (as you can see), near some RR tracks, west side atlana.  wil just drove right through the woods and mud.

it was very peaceful out there.  i was having so much fun!

back in the car/truck, with my head soaking wet, robert says “oh, i have another pancho”.  very funny, robert.  thanks a lot….

(he later gave it away)

later, at little 5 points, i tried to shake a tree so it would drop snow on robert and wil.  no luck…. but robert shook one, which let loose an avalanche on my head!  hilarious!

then, with soaking wet feet and head, i started getting cold.  what was “fun” and “beautiful” to most of us, was more of a “survival” situation to some others…

(hope i’m not always a “downer”.  but, man, we just can’t forget to help those in need, can we?)

thanks, wil, robert, and food-preppers.  (especially robert, the “avalanche-maker”)
