why we give

the other night, at passion city church, i was able to join a few thousand people singing to the King of the universe.  for a while, i just looked around, taking in the beauty of the singing-people… then i started to sing to the King, also.

later, we were reminded by the speaker (louie giglio) that we sometimes gather in to our churches without the awe that a powerful God deserves.  he said that if tiger woods were there, giving the prayer, we’d be twittering our friends like crazy.  or if the beatles reunited to lead the worship, we’d be updating our facebook- pronto.  he was right.

later still, we stood silently, trying to approach God in awe.  then we sang again.  “and i’ll stand in awe of you”  “you are God in heaven, here am i on earth, so i’ll let my words be few” (eccl. 5)

i found myself praying “God, please don’t kill me.  you’re so far above me, please don’t kill me”.  never really prayed like that before…

a few minutes ago, i read from luke 19, the zaccheus story.  Jesus went to his house to eat, and the others grumbled and said “he has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner”… … … i thought “wow, i’m so glad He does that!  me, the sinner; He’s come into my house, my life!”  AND He hasn’t killed me!!

what, you say, does this have to do with sharing food with the homeless? thank you for asking!

when someone thanks us for a meal, we’ve started responding “don’t thank me, thank God… He’s the giver!”

He’s given us so much life, so much grace, so much abundance, that we just have to give! it’s no chore, is it?  it’s just an overflow….

eh

ps. check out what zaccheus did….
